- The Feeding Programme provides a daily nutritious maize porridge meal for children.
- Support helps around 1,500 children attending Chinthowa school and the surrounding community.
- Emergency food assistance and elderly support help protect the most vulnerable during failed harvests and rising food prices.
Help provide food and hope today for children and families in Malawi.
Standing Together in Times of Hunger and Hardship
In rural Malawi, life depends heavily on the success of the harvest. When crops fail because of drought, flooding, or poor weather, families can quickly face severe food shortages.
In recent years, communities around Chinthowa have experienced repeated challenges caused by poor harvests and climate-related hardship. Many families have struggled to grow enough food to last until the next planting season. As food becomes scarce, prices in local markets rise sharply, placing even basic meals beyond the reach of the poorest households.
As is so often the case, it is the most vulnerable children and elderly people who suffer the greatest hardship.
Through the combined efforts of the Malawi Government and the Chinthowa Development Trust, vital support has reached families during these difficult periods. Emergency food assistance, school feeding programmes, and community support have helped many families survive the “lean season” – the critical months before the next harvest.
Because of this support, children are able to continue attending school, families are protected from the worst effects of hunger, and communities are given hope during extremely difficult times.
The Chinthowa Feeding Programme
For many children in the villages surrounding Chinthowa, hunger is a daily reality.
Some families survive on very small incomes and simply cannot provide enough food for everyone in the household. Without support, vulnerable children can easily become malnourished, affecting both their health and their ability to learn in school.
To help address this, the Chinthowa Development Trust Feeding Programme provides children with a daily meal of nutritious maize porridge to support healthy growth and development.
For some children, this may be the most substantial meal they receive all day.
The Feeding Programme does more than fight hunger. It also helps:
- Improve school attendance
- Increase concentration in lessons
- Support children’s health and wellbeing
- Give families reassurance during difficult times
The programme is made possible through the dedication of local volunteers who prepare and serve meals each day with great care and commitment. It is a powerful example of a community working together to protect its children and invest in their future.
Today, the Feeding Programme supports around 1,500 children attending the Chinthowa school and surrounding community.
Supporting Elderly People in Chinthowa
In many rural villages in Malawi, elderly people have little or no support. Some have no younger family members able to care for them, particularly during periods of economic hardship and failed harvests.
Following the devastating floods and droughts affecting Malawi in recent years, many older people in Chinthowa and surrounding villages were left at serious risk of malnutrition.
In response, the Chinthowa Development Trust introduced a dedicated feeding and support programme for elderly members of the community.
Currently, around 39 elderly people receive essential food supplies, including maize and cooking oil, helping them maintain their health, dignity, and independence.
Emergency Support for Vulnerable Families
Alongside our structured programmes, the Trust also provides emergency food assistance to vulnerable families facing crisis situations.
When harvests fail or unexpected hardship strikes, families can quickly find themselves without enough food. Through emergency support, we aim to ensure that no family is left completely without help during times of need.
Building Hope for the Future
Food support is not simply about relieving hunger today. It is about protecting children’s education, supporting health, strengthening communities, and helping families survive long enough to rebuild their lives.
The Chinthowa Development Trust believes that every child deserves the chance to grow, learn, and thrive – and every elderly person deserves care, dignity, and compassion.
